Hello everyone! I'm so glad you're joining me for my class on how I combine Patterned papers. I've got four very different layouts using lots of the same products..let me show you how I've put them together!
The new supplies that I've used for this class can be found here. When I received my order, I separated the papers into categories:
Bold Prints:
Solids:
Small Prints or Tone on Tone (that can be used as a Solid):
and
I also ordered a few new items for the layouts:
Then, I grabbed a few things from my stash that might work for embellishments:
and
Now to find some photos and get started!
LAYOUT #1 Teenage Blingy
The best thing about Patterned Papers is that they can be very versatile! Lots of them come double sided and I love to take advantage of that! Because I was stressed out about making sure I got things done this week, in time for the class, I decided to use sketches to complete my layouts...made things VERY easy!
For this layout, I used a sketch out of the PageMaps book. It started out looking like this:
This is what I came up with:
I wanted the allover busy pattern of the brown text to sort of fade into the background, so I used Kraft cardstock for the page. In deciding where to use the bolder pattern of the GIRLY paper, I looked for the next largest part of the sketch. I could easily have switched the position of these two papers to make the Girly pattern show up more, but I really enjoy using the Kraft for my backgrounds, so I went this way! This sketch uses alot of different patterns and directions on the papers, so I played around a little with the fronts and backsides to come up with the rest of the placement. I find that if you start with a few papers, then draw from the colors in them, you can add a smaller pattern almost anywhere. The feeling of this page really comes from all of the extras I've added...the acrylic flowers (those have been in my stash for three years!), the paper flowers, the diecut stickers, and the tiny green gems all add a teenage girly feel. As you can see, I've mixed up the fonts for my title...making the Girly Girl stand out by going with something bigger for it. I've even resorted to using 7's for my L's because I'm out of L's!
Layout #2 - Sweet Little Girl Page
I took the cutest photos of my niece Chloe last week...actually bought her a dress to go with these papers...shhhhh, don't tell anyone! This is what I started with:
I quickly realized that I wanted a little more contrast on my page, so I changed it up a little:
Better, right? Once again, I'm using a Becky Fleck sketch for this:
I LOVE to use a bold patterned paper for my page background, so that's what I decided to do with this layout. And, since I really like the backside of it, I cut the middle out of it that will be behind the largest piece of Patterned paper:
I don't do this very often, but as I said, I may as well save it to use it!
Here is the finished layout:
For a softer looking, little girl layout, I used only the one bold print. The rest of the patterns are small or even monochromatic so they don't really stand out at all...they just look like a solid color. I like to break up a busy photo with a solid colored mat to make it stand out from a patterned paper background. On this layout, I actually pulled the photo on the left away even more by using pop dots under it.
I really wanted this layout to portray Chloe's sweet personality, so I kept the embellishments very girly. The butterflies are cut out of the patterned paper and I've used stickles on them to make them shimmer. Once dried, I bent them so that the wings would have some dimension off of the page. I used the diecut sticker as part of my title...thought it fit with the theme that Chloe is just growing up too fast! The journaling is around the edge to pull all of the patterns together into a frame.
Layout #3 - WILD Girl--Bold Patterns
For this layout, I wanted to use lots of big bold patterns:
My niece Amber is loud, bold and pretty sweet, so I thought these patterns would show that off. When using more than one big pattern on a layout, you have to find a way to have separation, otherwise your photos will get lost on the layout. Color blocking is a good way to do that. I kept the background white, which I like to do when using bright colors.
Here is the finished layout:
I sanded the embossed paper to bring out a bit of the pattern. These Heidi Grace papers are so pretty and shimmery...sometimes shimmer throws me off when scrapbooking because it's hard to put a flat paper over the top of it. Colorblocking saved me on that account too! I think the shimmer looks awesome as the top layer here!
For embellishments on this one, I cut out a strip of the house patterned paper. If you weren't able to get some of that, you could use a row of flowers, some fun lace and ribbon or any pattern out of a paper that you do have. I've also used some of the Velvet borders around and on top of the photos. A few of the diecut stickers helped pull it all together for the title and journaling. The little asterisks from the American Craft glittery alphas remind me of flowers so I threw them on too! I originally planned on using the scalloped paper as the background, but the page felt unfinished. When I put the patterned paper behind it (with the center cut out to save some of the paper, again!) it completed it for me. What do you think?
Layout #4 - Even bolder!
I had enough scraps of these papers to do at least one more layout...and plenty of photos of my nieces in their cute spring dresses, so I decided to give you a bonus layout, LOL
Here's what I started with:
More wild photos, so I wanted to use the rest of the Love, Elsie papers on them.
Again...rushed for time and just want to get a layout done? Use a sketch! This time, I chose a Pencil Lines sketch...by Jana Eubank:
When I saw how much my style this sketch is...with lots of white space, I just couldn't resist it!
Here's what I did with it:
If you know my layouts, you've probably noticed that I don't use colored cardstock very often for a background. Usually, it's White, Kraft, or Black. When I did this layout, I realized that it's been a while since I've used black even! I REALLY love the way bright colors pop off of a black background, so I thought it would be perfect for this! When you use a big print, they're easier to work with if you neutralize it by covering part of it up. I did this with the pink embossed paper, which I used my black Ink pad on to bring out the pattern. I also inked all of the patterned papers to tie them together on the layout.
To embellish this, I wanted to pump up the fun factor by using even brighter title letters and buttons. The white lace keeps the layout a little girly without being frou frou, and again, tones down the pattern a little. I wanted the photos to pop off, so the white helps that happen. The sketch had a circle on the upper corner, but I like to journal a little, so I used a circular journaling block down below instead. The flowers are cut out of the shimmery paper and the row of buttons ground the photos with the title.
Thanks so much for taking my class! I hope you've enjoyed a little glimpse of my thought processes as I put together a layout with fabulous patterned papers! If you have any questions, send me a PM!
