Fashionable Hyrbid Art

Printing digital elements onto fabric and sewing them onto clothing.

   In this class I am going to teach you how to print digital elements or pages onto fabric for sewing projects or to add a nice texture to your traditional paper layouts. I want to give you fair warning that when printing on fabric, you need to allow for 12 hours of dry team before handling.Also be sure to launder any clothing you will be using before sewing anything on it.

I constantly find myself looking at digital kits and think they would be adorable clothes for Jasmine. There are so many fun and whimsical designs out there! The two kits in particular I used on my projects are both by Isabel Mendez (Crisdam Designs).   So first things first, open your photo editing program and set the dimensions to 8x11 (the size of the fabric sheets you will be printing on). Now, what I like to do is cram as many fun goodies as I can on one sheet so that I am not wasting any of it.

if you are printing a layout, make sure you resize it as well

I suggest printing a practice test on a regular sheet of printer paper first, to be sure of colors and size before using the fabric sheet.

  Now, print your page onto the fabric by following the manufacturer's directions. Be very careful when lifting off the printing tray and put it somewhere safe and allow it to dry for 12 hours.

 When your page is completely dry, cute your individual elements from the sheet using a sharp pair of scissors. Arrange the pieces onto your shirt, pillow, or canvas tote. I do not suggest pinning them in place because the pin marks do show. Instead, lay them out then sew them one by one.

 These birdies I chose already have cute little “stitch” marks around them so they were really simple to follow. Don't worry about them being perfect.

Now add buttons and ribbon, etc to add some fun dimension.
