Here's Looking at You, Marrakech 18 comments

Basic Grey goes to Morocco!

Basic Grey has a way of inspiring my awe with every new collection and I know I can’t be alone in thinking this way!  There is a reason why they are one of the most popular scrapbook companies around.  Their new collection Marrakech really illustrates why Basic Grey is on top of the charts.  The colors are rich: orange, teal, blue, and green, with a touch of darker neutrals thrown in.  And the patterns…oh, the patterns!  One of my favorite features of most Basic Grey collections is that they have distressed solids, bold iconic patterns that fit the theme of the line, and plenty of more subtle patterns that you can mix and match to create pages that work for almost any subject or season.

Marrakech channels the warmth of Morocco and almost makes you feel like you can hear the music of Casablanca and smell the spices in the market.  You get flowers, elephants, graphic mosaics, and more.  It can be as exotic or versatile as you want it to be!

My first layout was true to the essence of this line.  I have a friend who went to Egypt last year and has asked me to scrap her photos for her.  This line was a no-brainer!  The main colors of the photos were sky blue and the orange of the sand so I used those paper colors as well. I added the dark blue paper as a mat to ground all those bright colors.  I used a collage template to group the photos in a block because there were so many.  The page only needed a border sticker up the side and a few of the awesome chipboard stickers and title letters to complete it.

My next layout shows just how easily this line translates to your every day pages.  My husband was goofing around for this photo of him playing video games and the rusty paper matched his shirt perfectly.  I used some of the more masculine prints for this page, like the stripes and checks.  Layering stickers, chipboard, and brads gave me some great circle accents.

Last Thanksgiving I hosted our annual “Friendsgiving” celebration and I just didn’t have enough traditionally colored table cloths so I mixed it up for a more contemporary palette of teal and orange.  The Basic Grey was fantastic paired with these photos!  I matted the pictures with orange and set everything on a background of teal.  Alone, the patterns I used here do have a Moroccan feel to them but by adding other details like the felt house and leaves I was able to make the layout feel homey rather than exotic.

This last layout is my favorite of the bunch and it really proves that this line is versatile!  I chose only green, blue, and teal papers for this page.  I have a little bit of a love affair with this color combo and (of course) I had the great photo to go with it.  Again, here is my husband goofing around (are we getting a theme here!?) and I really wanted the focus to be on the picture itself.  I cut the giant chipboard flower so that it better suited the spacing of my design, added some brads, my title in mini alphas, some journaling spots and a monogram sticker.  And of course I distressed and inked all over the place!

I always like to whip up a few cards with my scraps when I am getting low on a line.  Why not make something useful and quick as long as the supplies are out, right?  Both of these cards came together so easily.  The first uses more of the fun chipboard stickers as well as the chipboard alphas. I overlapped the mini monogram stickers on the second one, inked them and then glazed them with a layer of Ranger Glossy Accents.

And in the name of continuing my quest to recycle everything I use into something scrappy… an altered spice bottle.  I will probably store brads or flowers in here.  I think having pretty storage is lovely! I simply covered over the label with paper, tied a few ribbons around it, and added some stickers, chipboard, brads, and a flower.
