Keeping Cool! 6 comments

These layouts can help make even the hottest of summer days cool.

Cool colors in nature are calming and recede into the background. Think of a beautiful blue lake or a purple mountain topped with snow, these images give us a sense of peace. The great thing about using cool colors in our layouts is that they help the photo pop forward making it the focus, especially when the photo includes warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows).

On the color wheel above those colors ranging from green to red purple are cool colors. Check out these layouts by the digi ct to see how they used cool colors in there layouts.

Niagra Falls by Laura (Art_Teacher)

Laura says "Our reveal this week was to use cool colors, and what could be cooler than Niagara Falls? My hubby and I just recently took a trip to Canada, where we saw the splendor of the Falls up close and personal on the Maid of the Mist boat tour. We were definitely cooled in the spray!"

Hope & Love by Kristianne (MamaK321)

Kristi's layout of her daughter is a perfect example of how cool colors can help the photo pop, especially when the photo is warm. The first thing you see when you look at the layout is the beautiful face. Her peach skin and brown hair stands out on the background of soft blues and purples, even with some of the elements overlapping the photo.

 100% Boy by Sara (Keling)

Sara says "It's easy for me to use cool colours, especially blues, thanks to my boys! In order to give the photo a more muted look, I duplicated it, desaturated the top layer, and then reduced the opacity, so just a hint of colour peeked through."

Houston Zoo Aquarium by Amanda (mkcdaisy)

Amanda chose some great underwater photos to go with our cool color theme, her layout makes me cooler already. It's great how the colors are taken right from the photos so it looks like the whole layout is in the ocean.

Cool Breezes & Sunny Skies by Jennifer (sarahwhithers)

Jenn says "This is for the Cool Colors reveal. I went with some pretty aqua colours cuz I always feel like those colours just make me feel cooler just by looking at them. :)"

Little Guy by Sarah (davsar)

Sarah says "I love that cool colors seem to coordinate with boys so well. Blue of course is perfect for a little baby boy!!"

It's a cool, cool summer by Janell (janello)

Janell's layout of her adorable kids really says "cool summer days". With the great blue background, the waves and the tree branch above, it feels like your standing in the shade of large tree with the breeze of the ocean hitting your face. It's amazing how colors can enhance the feeling of a layout, just imagine this same layout with a yellow background.

Friendships by Shannon (-Shannon-)

Shannon showed her cool side with a great layout of her and a friend hanging in the pool.  She makes excellent use of the Spotty Dots from SAS Designs, like bubbles rising up her layout.

A monster he is not by Jennifer (JennK)

While blue is the usual choice when using cool colors, Jennifer chose green for this cute layout of her nephew. These colors really work well for layout of little boys, even matching his sleeper.

Sisters Beauty by Kirsty (ksbella)

Kirsty's beautiful layout of her daughters shows with a few warm elements cooler colors are great for a feminine layout too.

Calm, Peaceful by Ronny (Smiley-Scrap8)

Ronny says "Cool colors are those on the color wheel in the blue, green and purple family. To me they are calming colors and very much found in nature. So I chose to do my layout of a peaceful family moment in nature, a walk on the beach. These photo just make smile and I think the cool color palette really adds to the calming feel."

Signs of Summer by Angie (nun69)

Angie says "So its all about cool colors for this week's digi reveal and what better way to show that off than by using some pics from our summer here in WA."

Hold On by Egle (FairyMouseMom)

Egle wrote, "I found this Bob Marley quote...and thought it was beautiful. Isn't it what everyone dreams?"

Here are some of the digital products used to make these wonderful layouts:

School Scrapping! 2 comments

Can you believe that it is almost August and the summer will soon be over? It is incredible how quickly time flies. This year, we will reach a milestone in my house. My daughter will be going to first grade and will be in school all day. My son will be in his second year of preschool. The house will be a lot quieter, yet much more hectic. After realizing the amount of photos and papers I acculumated over the course of my daughters year of Kindergarten and my son's first year of preschool, I vowed to keep up. My plan is to have one grade scrapbooked, filed and organized before the next school year starts. I've started the project and now I only have 4 more weeks left to get everything wrapped up! For this reveal, I've tackled some graduation photos and school classroom photos!

Right now, there are so many school products in the market that can make the task much easier! I've used different papers and embellishments from Imaginisce, Adornit, Little Yellow Bicycle, Webster's Pages, Prima, and My Mind's Eye.

It always seem so difficult to get a great photograph of my kids with their teachers at school events. They are always so busy tending to the class and parents. This year, I managed to capture a great shot of my son Colin with his fabulous pre-k teacher at his graduation. By converting the photo to black and white, I thought it created a great emphasis on my favorite photo. The background paper from Adornit is one of my favorite graduation papers! It has a lot of great detail already pre-printed on the paper which required less embellishment. I used a graphic approach using lots of black cardstock for emphasis. I was able to use quite a few photos from the graduation ceremony on a strip I created on the left hand side.

"Blue Butterflies"

It has been a tradition in our house for the last 3 years that one of our kids has been a "blue butterfly". (just the name of one of the classes in preschool) I knew this particular paper from Webster's Pages that had the blue butterfly would be perfect for my son's class photo! I love the subtle colors of the die-cut stickers and paper from this line as well. I used some additional subtle blue papers from the Little Yellow Bicycle Traveler collection to help the color pop. Finally, I layered one of the 4"x6" transparencies over the journaling spot to add another pattern to the layout.

"School Memories"

The most common picture to scrap from school will always be the class photo! For this layout, I decided to create a simply designed layout that I could repeat year after year. This photo is of my daughter Lauren's kindergarten photo from September of 2008. The die-cut frame from My Mind's Eye was the perfect way to emphasize the photo! Using the Teacher Pet line by Imaginisce, I felt like I added just enough embellishment while enjoying some white space!

"Back to School" Card

Using some left over scraps, I created a card to put in my daughter's lunch on the first day back to school!

Watch your Layouts take Shape 4 comments

with Fancy Pants Kraft Kuts

Fancy Pants Kraft Kuts

Fancy Pants always seems to be on top of the trends in scrapbooking.  That is one of the many reasons they are on my list of favorite  manufacturers.  Two of my favorite trends right now are shaped pages and kraft colored cardstock and patterned paper.  With Fancy Pants Kraft Kuts line, you have the perfect union of these two trends.

Check out what I did with these products for my reveal:

For this layout, I decided to keep the kraft and turquoise colors of the round scalloped circle patterned paper as the color scheme for my page.  I wanted the focus to stay on the photos.  I cut out the large circle from the scalloped border.  I then distressed both.  I cut lots of circles from a piece of turquoise cardstock using my Cricut machine and my Plantin Schoolbook Cartridge.  I distressed the edges of the circles and attached them between the large circle and the scalloped border.  My photo mat here was one of the Summer Soiree journaling spots.  The colors of that line matched this line perfectly.

Our Elusive 3rd Kitty

This was another page I did with one of the scalloped circles.  I did something different with this page to show you an alternate way to use these shaped pieces of paper.  The price of shaped pattern papers is sometimes higher, but with a little creativity, you can make them worth the money.  For this layout, I cut out the scalloped border where it met the pattern of the large circle in the center.  (I saved the large circle I cut from the middle and used it for my next layout.)  I then cut my scalloped circle border into pieces to frame my photo and create my page design.    There are so many ways you can use the outsides of the shapes.

Future Teacher?

For my next layout, I used the center of the circle from the piece of patterned paper I used in my last layout.  I added a rectangle of kraft damask paper along with 2 ruffled pieces of the cardstock stickers from the accent sheet.  The sticker pattern blended in to my background too much with all of the neutral colors I used.  I decided to paint the pieces and then pleated them behind my piece of patterned paper.  I love the dimension ruffled or pleated paper adds to a page.  I finished up my page with some journaling strips, a clustering of accents and my title.

Almost 7

For my last layout, I decided to make it a shaped layout.  My intentions when I first started to do this reveal was to have several shaped layouts but I got so caught up in demonstrating different uses for the kraft papers that I only ended up with one shaped page.  This was a page that was so easy to make because of the shape of the paper.  I easily added the cardstock sticker accents which left the perfect sized spot for my title and an area for my photos.  I cut tree shapes out of the patterned papers and added my photos and title.  I love the finished look of the shape of the page.
