Cards for Soldiers -- Updated with Winners!

Post by wimom » Sun Sep 01, 2019 12:06 pm

The $5 gift certificate winner via random number generator is number 37, Loreen! In addition, because we passed the 100-card mark, additional gift certicates will go to number 61, Yankeegirl/Kathy, and number 123, Retiree3/Donna. Thanks to all for participating and donating to Cards for Soldiers!

The September Card Challenge is to support the Cards for Soldiers program through the donation of your handmade cards. This group ships donated cards overseas to soldiers who then use the cards to write loved ones back home.

No limit on entries this month! Cards newly created for this challenge may be combined with one other challenge plus the Summer Motivational Challenge.

This month only, you also may enter old cards you have made/posted in past months but ended up never using. However, these old cards may not be combined with other challenges.

Post photos of cards you are donating to this thread by 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30. “Group” photos of the cards are fine but please include how many cards you are donating so I don’t count wrong! A $5 ACOT gift card will go to one Cherry via the random number generator. If 100 cards are donated, additional gifting will occur! Please ask if you have any questions.
The group does have some requirements, so please read through this long post and check out the links!

Cards for Soldiers Blog
Cards for Soldiers Facebook

CARD SIZE: Any size up to 5x7.

THEME: Hello, Thinking of You, Birthday, Miss You, Thank You, Get Well and Holiday all are popular. Cards appropriate for soldiers who are parents to sent to their kids also are very popular. All themes are always welcome, but the group currently is gearing up for the holidays. Two deadlines are approaching:

Thanksgiving and Veterans Day cards must be received by Oct. 15.
Christmas and New Years cards must be received by Nov. 15.

EMBELLISHMENT:  Important: NO GLITTER! This is a safety issue for soldiers. Also, not too bulky –- these will be going through the mail.

INSIDE: Leave blank, or include a small sentiment appropriate to the card theme. Leave plenty or room for the soldier to write to loved ones. Do not sign. If you use a dark-colored card base, you must line the inside with white paper.

BACK: You may sign or put an address label on the back, or you may leave the back blank.

ENVELOPES: Include an envelope for each card. Do NOT put the card in the envelope -– instead, put the envelope in the card.

OTHER OPTIONS: You also may send cards with a message of support, signed by you, and cards for VA hospitals -- put in separate, labeled plastic bags. The program also sends other items with the cards, including pens, gum, suckers, and individually wrapped hard candies. See the Cards for Soldier Blog for details.

MAILING: Place all cards in plastic bags to protect them from rain, etc. A small number of cards will ship well in a padded envelope. I fit my 11 cards in a Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope and could fit more. For larger numbers of cards or if you are including other items your best choice of box will depend on weight and how far you are from Michigan (home of Cards for Soldiers). The site suggests checking out flat-rate boxes and Regional Rate B boxes (if you are close to Michigan). Be sure to fill empty box spots with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, etc., to prevent shifting and damage to the cards. Mail to:

Cards for Soldiers

388 E M 72 HGWY
Grayling, MI 49738-8262

Then be sure to check the Cards for Soldiers Facebook site to see your cards -– pictures of donated cards are posted there regularly!

Here are the 11 cards I will be sending. If I have time I will do more, just not sure of my time right now.

Wonderful challenge!  This is a good time of year to donate with the holidays coming too.  I usually donate kids cards and hope to do some for all of the categories!

Can we use cards that we made years ago but never posted here?  I have quite a collection of cards that I've never sent.  Even if they aren't eligible for this challenge, I'm going to donate them.

Yes, "old" cards are eligible, even if you posted them here previously! However those "old" cards may not be combined with other challenges. Only new cards may be combined. So dig through your baskets, clean out the drawers, post and donate!
