January 2020 Book Lover's Challenge

Post by rachel0017 » Wed Jan 01, 2020 12:03 am

Congratulations to this month’s winner of the $5 gift card: #8, blfonty, AKA Bonnie!!
Congratulations also to the winner of the RAK: #6, Deanna13, AKA Deanna!
Thank you to everyone who submitted a layout this month!

In past years, with the Book Lover’s Challenge, I have tried to match the book with the theme of the month or season. This year, I am going to switch it up a little, and take you through my current bookshelf. Each month, I will feature a book that I am either currently reading, or have recently finished. I’m hoping this will keep things fresh, and will encourage me to keep reading!

Our featured book this month is Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Where the Crawdads Sing is the story of Kya Clark, “The Marsh Girl”, orphaned and alone and surviving on nothing but her wits, the land, and the help of the one or two people she allows into her life. The book is told in alternating chapters, one storyline beginning in 1952, when Kya is six years old, and the other in “present day” 1969, when the body of small-town hero Chase Andrews is found in the marsh, at the foot of a fire tower, apparently having fallen to his death. The townsfolk suspect foul play, and point the finger at the mysterious and wild “Marsh Girl”. While a murder trial ensues in the present day, through the storyline of the past, we learn about the life of the misunderstood Kya, the events she’s endured which have helped shape the person she’s become, and the good – and bad – that can come when she lets love penetrate her well-guarded heart.

Image

OPTION 1: Flora and Fauna
One of the most important parts of the book, is the detailed description of the lowcountry in which Kya lives. Her family are the gulls, her home, the reeds, and I think Delia Owens does a great job of bringing this setting to life. So, for this option, the focus should be on the natural world. It can be the ocean, the mountains, a deer that crossed your path, or the flowers springing up in your garden, as long as it is NOT something man-made.

OPTION 2: How do you show love
A major theme of the book is love, the different ways it can be shown, the different people it can come from, and the positives and negatives that can result when you open up your heart. For Option 2, make a page about a way in which someone has shown love. It can be something like bringing flowers on an anniversary, or something more unexpected, like my sample below, in which my husband recreated a special bumper sticker I lost in a car accident four years ago. Either way, you must include at least three sentences of journaling to explain how the subject of your page shows love.

Option 2: This layout shows my friend Rose and I volunteering at the Fantasy of Trees' Decorate-A-Cookie booth. It is a fundraiser for our Children's Hospital in town. An amazing number of people volunteer each year and this has become a tradition for us. The cookie booth was a lot of fun for us and the children stopping at our table.

This is a great challenge!
I chose option 2.
I journaled about our dog Karma and how we show love to her and how she shows her love to everyone.
I combined with the double page challenge.
