I think that scrapbooking has a lot in common with album covers. The artists that design them are usually working to create something that goes along with the theme of the album, and through art and creativity they tell the story of the music on one 12 x 12 canvas. As scrapbookers, we use art and creativity to tell the story behind our photos, and we also do it on a 12 x 12 canvas. So much inspiration can be found from album covers, and for this month's challenge I am going to choose one of my favorite techniques that album cover designers use... and that is using one huge photo for the entire background of their canvas. The photo is carefully chosen, and on top of it the title of the album and the name of the artist is creatively placed, sometimes with just that simplicity alone, and other times with the addition of many other artistic elements.
So my challenge for this month is to use this type of album cover design for your inspiration... making your photo the whole background of your page. Put your title ON TOP of the photo, if you journal put your journaling ON TOP of the photo, and feel free to embellish the photo in any creative way that you want... stamp on it, doodle on it, place embellishments on it... do whatever you want. The main goal here is that the photo is your background... NO PATTERNED PAPER IS TO BE USED! I realize that getting a photo that large will be very difficult for the paper girls, so they may use one piece of solid colored cardstock to mat their photo on, making the photo as large as they possibly can. But NO PATTERNED PAPER. Card girls may also mat on top of a piece of solid colored cardstock as long as their photo takes up most of the space. But digi girls... one large photo from edge to edge!
Be creative in picking your photo, as you are going to have to put your title and journaling and anything else on top of the photo. If you are going to have a lot of journaling, be sure to pick a photo that has some "dead" space that you can journal on top of. I have collected a bunch of album covers which I feel that us scrappers can relate to and to give you some samples of what the designers have done . Feel free to use these or any other album covers of this nature for inspiration.
Here is a recap of the "rules"...
1) One photo only - and it must be as large as your page and serve as your entire background. (Paper girls and card girls may use one piece of solid colored cardstock as a mat for the photo, but the photo must be as large as possible)
2) No patterned paper - the photo is your background
3) Title and any journaling must be on the photo itself, as should any stamping, doodling, or any embellishments - you don't have to make this a "flat" design. One thing we scrappers have over album cover designers is we can use dimension, so feel free to use pop dots and flowers and anything that is dimensional.
4) Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
This is open to digi, paper, cards, or anything else that you are inspired to create.
