May 2023 Book Lover's Challenge - UPDATED WITH WINNERS!
Better late than never, right friends?? I really shouldn't be allowed to host a challenge during the last month of school. I apologize for the massive delay.  😔

The winner of the $5 gift card for this month is #18 - joannie!
The winner of the automatic entry for next month is #11 - shakyteach (Shala)!

Congratulations to this month's winners!

The Oppenheimer triplets - Sally, Lewyn, and Harrison - have never been close. In fact, they have spent most of their lives actively avoiding each other, so much so that even when Sally and Lewyn find themselves rooming in adjacent dorms during their freshman year at Cornell, each continues to deny the existence of the other. This hasn’t ever bothered them though; after all, can three people really be considered “triplets” when they began as eggs in a Petri dish, implanted into their mother when no other attempts at pregnancy worked? They weren’t all even meant to survive to full gestation. The fact that they did was a miracle, but did that mean they had to like one another? And, though they grew up privileged in a well-to-do New York City neighborhood, their parents were locked in a loveless marriage with Salo, their father, having no time for them, and Johanna, their mother, having too much time. Salo, grief-stricken and full of regret from a tragedy he once caused, did not feel worthy of love while Johanna mistakenly thought she was the one who could save him. As Salo took refuge in collecting priceless works of art, Johanna poured all her energy into her children, attempting to form a bond between them where there was none, but loving her role as a mother nonetheless.

When a chance meeting turns Salo’s world upside down, he makes a decision that will have lasting ramifications for his family, not the least of which is Johanna’s insistence that, now that the triplets are all off at college, it might be the right time to “unfreeze” the fourth egg that was created all those years ago, and have a baby in the house once more. They do, and whatever relationship the triplets might have had with each other, their parents, or their sister, Phoebe, “the latecomer”, are gone for good once Phoebe arrives.

Fast forward 17 years and Phoebe, now a high school senior, overhears a comment that makes her question her whole existence. As she attempts to uncover the truth about how she came to be, she turns to her siblings for answers and they all find that the latecomer - the one they didn’t want - might end up being just the person they need to piece back together their broken family.

OPTION 1: 45 YEARS
Some books take place over the course of a day, some a few weeks, and some cover a handful of months. The Latecomer, however, spans 45 years, starting with the night of Salo's accident, before he and Johanna had even met, and ending when Phoebe is 17 years old. Therefore, for Option 1, I want YOU to go back 45 years, so all layouts for this option must feature ONLY photos from 45 years ago or prior. That is, from 1978 or before. This should be fun!

OPTION 2: THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
Though the book's title refers to Phoebe, the last of the Oppenheimer siblings, the majority of the book centers around the triplets. So, for Option 2, your page will need to have elements in groups of three. It must have:
  • three photos (not AT LEAST three, but three EXACTLY)
  • a three-word title
  • three different patterned papers (again, EXACTLY three, no more, no less)
  • three of any other element of your choice (three tags, three flowers, three hearts, etc.) - be sure you point out the three elements when you post your layout so I don't miss them  😁

The Fine Print:
1. HAVE FUN MAKING YOUR PROJECT!
2. Entries open to new projects - paper, digital, & card making.
3. May be combined with one other challenge that allows it.
4. Due May 31st, at 11:59 PM.
5. One lucky winner, chosen at random, will receive a $5 ACOT gift card from me!
6. Up to 3 entries permitted per month.
7. If there are more than 15 unique entries (not including bonuses) during the month, a second name will be drawn and that person will get an automatic entry for the following month.

Re: May 2023 Book Lover's Challenge
Fun challenges!  Question about the first challenge -- does the photo itself have to be 45+ years old?  Or can it be a layout about something old? Specifically, I recently cleaned out my parents' home, and I found a bunch of my old artwork from when I was a kid.  I took pictures of them and was planning to do a layout with them.  Would that count?

Also, did you like the book?  Just curious because I found the characters so unlikeable!

That's a great question! I hadn't thought about that, but I think a layout of your childhood artwork would work just fine.

And, I did really like the book, even though I agree that Lewyn was probably the only character I truly "liked". However, typically, if a book makes me FEEL something, good or bad, then I enjoy it. It's the books where I really don't care what happens to the characters that I don't like.

Re: May 2023 Book Lover's Challenge
This is an interesting challenge, although, I don’t know that I would like this book.  It sounds rather depressing. 😀

I am doing a heritage album and all the photos are over 45 years old, and older. LOL So I think I have that option covered.
I do have a question as I am fairly new.  (I was invited for NSD challenges, and they have been fun.)  Do we only choose one option or can we submit a project for each?  Thank you.

I chose Option #2. Background paper is one pattern paper then the 2 others. The leafy wooden vines are the 3 embellishments.

I'll answer your question.  You can enter up to 3 different layouts to this challenge. Any of your layouts can be for either option. A layout can be either Opt 1 or Opt 2.

My question is for option #2. Can we have more embellishments than the 3 things? Example can I have stickers, enamel dots, and three flower?

Re: May 2023 Book Lover's Challenge
Here is mine.  I chose option 1.  I could do option 1 all day! LOL  I have a ton of old photos that I need to get scrapped.  Thank you for the inspiration.  On the back of the photo mom wrote "before Virginia", so she was born in 1952, so the photos are older than that! LOL  I am doing this album for my sister.
