The only child of a single mother, we moved often for the work mom could get. I was an “odd” child and didn’t make friends easly. It didn’t help that my birthday often fell during Thanksgiving break and the friends I did have were often out of town. One year my mother had an inspired idea. She got a giant ribbon with stands that were long enough to go almost to my knees and stapled candy to the strands of ribbon. There were 8 strands hanging down. The button part she wrote, “Wish me a Happy Birthday” and told me to share the candy with those that did. She then took me to my favorite place in the whole world, the skating rink. Everyone wished me a Happy Birthday! I got to do something I enjoyed and be the center of attention. I may not have had a party, but that year I felt like a princess.
