Woolworth

MMC August 14 - Challenge 1 - sketch / nostalgic from childhood
2 clocks for the bonus
Of course October Afternoon again had the perfect paper. It was even called 5 & Dime which I used on the layout!
Journaling: My first “real” job was as a cashier/salesgirl at Woolworth’s
on Steinway Street in Astoria. I was 16 years old and
worked Thursday through Sunday. I worked there from
1987-1989 after school. I made $3.70 an hour. We wore
red vests. I used the old cash registers that didn’t calculate
the change for you. I would have to be on a register in the
middle because if I was on the ends, I would talk to people
using the photo booth on one side or the cute boy who
worked in his dad’s cigarette booth on the other side.
I walked the floor fixing displays and answering questions.
It was a good first job & I had fun & made some friends there.
I paid for my bridesmaid (for my cousin Tricia) dress/prom
dress and all the accessories. It was also my pocket money
for movies and whatnot.
Woolworth’s was the one place you could buy anything
from underwear to pets to food to craft & school supplies
to housewares and flowers. We cut plastic by the foot and
sold goldfish, parakeets, and hamsters. I got into cross-stitch
from seeing kits during my floor-walks. We had to do inventory
and clean up the store every night.
