Fixing up sewing problem

by Tam I AmDec 20, 2024
You can see I had lots of stitching trouble on this quilt. Examples of how I tried to improve the bad bobbin threads. (Not even the worst but had already fixed them.) I had to pull on the top threads that ended up pulled down and then tug the loops along the stitches to spread them out (so the top threads aren't pulled as tight/are looser but still lay flat). Clear as mud? Not foolproof - I did break some threads requiring another kind of fix.

It is beautiful! Congratulations on getting it done. I just want to say I do not get along with sewing machines! I hand quilted, when I quilted. The worst part for me is when I had to sew the pieces together before quilting. I could never figure out tensions, or half the time even thread the stupid machine. I am in awe of you for accomplishing this quilt!

Thanks! The internet is a great source now for figuring things out. The general rule is not to mess with the bobbin tension but I found it can be necessary if you have to keep turning up the upper thread tension. I learned how to do the binding from the internet. I've never taken classes. I wouldn't have the patience for hand quilting (so I don't know what I was thinking when I bought giant hoops years ago)!

Beautiful fabric, Tam! Maybe the tension isn't set correctly for the weight of the fabric. I've had this happen to me in the past.

Thanks! No, it's because I struggled feeding the quilt through. So it either lagged and gave me tiny stitches or sometimes my foot gave a jump and/or I pushed or pulled faster than the setting. The times I didn't struggle (where I was near the outside of the quilt) the stitches look much better. A lot of inconsistency.
