Homesick / James Joyce's Dublin
by scrappinmom99Aug 3, 2025
MMC July 28 - Challenge 1 - This or That - 7th layout on the 4th page (April 7)
After a long, bumpy bus ride from Donegal to Dublin, Aunt Patsy and I (Mom was not feeling up to the bus ride back yet so she and John stayed extra days in Donegal) checked in to the Ormond Hotel and found the smallest, most depressing, cold-water, no-wake-up-call, yellow hotel room. Also, there was only one key to the room between us. Who would get it? (Of course, Aunt Patsy got it!) I went out to walk around Dublin in the rain. It was too early to call Anthony at work (he’d be at lunch, but I wanted to tell him I was ready to come home and missed him) so instead I called my friend Gary from a phone booth on Ormond Quay. He knew I was homesick but was delighted to hear we were staying at the Ormond Hotel because it figures prominently in James Joyce’s Ulysses, including a fight over the room key! I walked around Dublin looking for a bookstore to get two copies of Ulysses for Gary and me, but it was after 6:00 p.m. and everything was already closed! I went back the next day to take a picture of the phone booth and it was GONE! How weird! (This is a stock photo…)
