Thomas did exceptionally well on his PSSA (standardized testing) and I wanted to do a lo about his accomplishment! I copied his actual repots and reduced it to fit underneath my journaling

The dictionary defines proud as, a feeling pleasure or satisfaction over something regarded as highly honorable or creditable, and that is exactly how I feel about you at this moment.

You have always liked school, even when you were struggling. You have always excelled in math, and according to your testing you have an above average IQ. But the Reading/ILA part of school has always been a source of struggle for you. I have watched you try your best to improve, and although you have it’s always been a tough hill for you to climb. But you trudge on, always trying to be the best student you can. You were very worried about the PSSA test. It is Pennsylvania’s state proficiency test, and they take it very seriously here. The test was taken when you were in 5th grade, and you have anxiously been awaiting the results. But summer came and went and you moved onto Jr. High.

Fast forward to today when I went to get the mail. There it was your report, in all its glory. I opened it no knowing what to expect. I was reading it and crying at the same time. It is broken down into 4 categories – Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. I looked at the Reading/ILA portion and you scored in the Proficient category, just barely missing the next level up of Advanced. I never expected such a high mark, and I can honestly say I was never prouder of you then I was at that moment. I continued reading the report where they break each section down. You scored an Advanced in Interpretation and analysis of text, which is the most difficult part of reading for you. By this point I am bawling. I moved onto the Math section and overall you scored an Advanced, the highest score you could possibly get, in fact you almost got a perfect score! I am crying even more at this point, tears of joy of course.

I couldn’t wait to show you the report and when I told you what you scored, you were just beaming. I just wanted to let you know how very proud I am of you , not only about your test scores , but about the fine young man you are growing up to be. I hope you can continue to apply yourself and try your best, and no matter if you score an Advanced or a lower grade, I will always be proud of you.
