Journaling: Switzerland, at 16, was the first time my brother and i had been
given this much freedom. Every day, there were organized tours and
we could go... or not. It was our choice with one exception. Each
day we would explore the local sites, shop, and people watch. It
was fabulous. One of my favorite memories was sitting at an
outdoor cafe with a girl from Yugoslavia, a local couple, a
friend of a friend from Germany, and a handful of us from
the United States. It was my first taste of seeing the world as
a global community, or understanding that we're all the same and
wanting the same things from our lives.
One night, we were required to go with our parents to a huge
castle where we were greated with troubadors and led into the
torture chambers for hor d'ouvres. Afterward we feasted on
twelve full courses, including a headed pig on a platter. It
was an amazing evening.
