Journaling:
After visiting Kristen’s house this spring she
casually mentioned that she didn’t understand
a few things that Jackson said and she had to
ask Lauren what he was saying. I never thought
much of it until when he registered for
kindergarten and I met the speech teacher there.
I asked her to test him and she did a quick test
there and suggested I call the district about
further testing. When they ok’d it he went back
to the school for a full test and she said he had
a mild/moderate speech problem. I never thought
if was that bad but we decided to enroll him in
speech right now, a few months before school
starts and to continue through kindergarten.
Part of the speech assessment is a hearing test.
He was tested at the school and they referred
him to the district for further testing. I was
very surprised to find that he has a hearing
problem, he doesn’t hear in the higher
frequencies. He is missing the s, f, and th
sounds. I now know why he says certain things
the way he does. After our assessment while
she copied the papers we played in the school
playground. I just didn’t know how I felt about
this. I felt sorry for him even though they say
it is so minor and shouldn’t cause too many
problems. I thought about my friend Jenica
who is in the hospital with her two year old
with brain cancer and it put it in perspective
for me. I am blessed to have this wonderful
boy with such a minor little problem. This is
nothing and we will deal with it. Count your
blessings! Jackson and his healthy body are
definitely one of my blessings.
