Journaling reads: I work for a Catholic hospital, although I am not Catholic. And while I am not Catholic, something about St. Mary’s Cathedral fascinates me. I love this building. I see the church spires as I walk into work at night, and often pause just to look at the angles and details. I have detoured on my way home to see the sun rise beyond its roofline. I have never been inside, but its peacefulness seems to extend beyond its walls. It seems to be protected from the blight and graffiti of the struggling neighborhood in which it sits. To be married in the cathedral, or to have a funeral service within its walls? Then you seem truly extra blessed by God. Nuns no longer rule the hallways of the hospital, and Sisters’ residence next to the cathedral has been repurposed for other needs, as fewer and fewer nuns serve here.But I truly hope that the Cathedral will live on, serving its friends and neighbors, and inspire that moment of peace to all, that it gives to me each time I pass by.
