Daddy saw an advertisement for one of those book clubs in all of the papers that were sent home with you from the hospital. “Free gift with purchase, buy two books, cancel at ANY time.” So he signed you up for the Winnie the Pooh Book Club at Scholastic Books. The first two books came in the mail with the free gift…this cute backpack. I took the appropriate pictures and it got shoved into your closet to be forgotten. This is when it starts to get interesting. I paid for the two books that they sent and wrote “cancel subscription” on the invoice. Normally with any other book club this works, but not this time. A few weeks later we got a big, heavy box from Scholastic. I didn’t even open it, but did open the invoice envelope on the outside. They had sent every single Pooh book in the series and wanted a payment of almost $200. Umm, no! So I went the next day to the post office and said that I didn’t order these books and they needed to be returned to Scholastic. “No problem,” said the post office, took the box, and that was the last I ever saw of it. They marked return to sender on it and sent it on it’s way. It took a couple more months before we saw the next invoice wanting the $200. I politely wrote back a letter telling them that the books had been returned to them and that our account was to be cancelled. Another couple of months pass and another invoice with a warning this time. Now, I tracked down Scholastic’s phone number and called them. I spoke to a very nice person who told me that sometimes their Receiving and Billing departments don’t communicate and they just didn’t know the books had been returned. They profusely apologized and cancelled our account. Whew, there that’s over. It’s been several months, but we don’t have to worry about that $200 hanging over us. Umm, no! Another invoice arrived, but this time it wasn’t from Scholastic, but a collections agency. Apparently our invoice had been turned over to them since we hadn’t paid and they were going to take legal action if it wasn’t paid within the next 30 days. At this point, we were furious. I contacted Scholastic and were told that on their end, we were good and didn’t owe anything. That it was a mix-up on their part. They instructed me to call the President of the Scholastic, who upon hearing me so distraught contacted the collection agency himself and took care of things. Finally, one year after you were born, we received a letter from the company apologizing for any harassment that resulted from this matter and that we would no longer be hearing from the collection agency.
