Doin my Daddy's Time

by RobbinWoodOct 1, 2006
The story behind the layout:

I took these photos of my granddaughter specifically with this layout in mind. I had been thinking about how the absence of her mother and her father's repeated incarcerations had affected her life. The summer that these photos were taken, her father had been arrested several times while in her company. The repeated arrests, have had a very traumatic effect on her, changing who she is forever. I started doing research on how children are affected by having an imprisoned parent. I was already seeing the undeniable strain and the signs of Post Traumatic Stress syndrome in her. I decided to use these very powerful photos and complete this layout, to give a voice to what she has been through and to let her know that she is not alone. This layout, and some other reality layouts, will be part of an album called the "Book of Truths", that will not be given to Alexis, until she is grown. Families tend to keep a lot of secrets about unpleasant events. The problem with this is; that it doesn't validate what a person has been through and leaves them, with a lot of unresolved conflicts. When there is a big difference between childhood memories and the stories a family tells, you end up with an adult who doesn't trust their own instincts or their own reality.
****************************************************************************
Journaling strips reads:

No 4 year old child should schedule their life around visiting day at the jail.

No 4 year old child should go into hysteria at the sound of jangling keys, because they sound like handcuffs.

No 4 year old child should wet herself, because she sees a police car driving down the street.

No 4 year old child should ask "whose house am I sleeping at today?”

No 4 year old child should know that an ankle bracelet isn't a form of jewelry.

No 4 year old child should greet other kids in the park by saying, Hi, my name is ............ and my daddy's in jail.

No 4 year old child should have post traumatic stress syndrome.

BUT YOU DO....... Because you are doing your daddy's time.

Journaling square reads:

Your life has been a series of traumas and disappointments and I don’t have an abundance of hope that it will change in the near future. For the past 4 years, you have been doing someone else’s time in your very personal way. Your father’s battle with alcohol and drug addiction has changed who you are, forever. Children with an incarcerated parent express a broad range of emotions, including fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, loneliness and guilt. You have a huge fear of abandonment and with all that has happened in your short life, I am sure that will always be an issue for you. I have struggled through the years on how much of the truth to tell you and then decided it was better not to hide anything and be very honest without shaming you in the process. Anger, has been your constant companion, as you work through your disappointment, resentments, frustration and sense of loss. As you get older, I am sure you will feel responsible for your mom and dad’s behaviors and suffer the guilt that all children feel of not being “enough” to motivate your parents into changing their lives or overcoming their addictions. All children of addicts feel this way, but when you are older and understand the illness of addiction, you will see how cunning, baffling and powerful and even stronger than a parents love, these addictions can be. I pray every day that you will take a totally different path in life and learn from all the examples of destruction around you. 7 out of 10 children with an incarcerated parent will one day themselves end up in prison, but life is all about choices, and it is up to you alone to choose what you want to do with your life. Until my last breath and beyond, I am here for you, Alexis, to show you the love and security that was your birthright.

For me, scrapbooking isn't just all the positives and selfies in life. Its keeping a diary in picture and embellishment form. Good, bad, and ugly. These layouts are very moving. Congrats on having the strength to get this down on paper. I don't know first hand this situation, but I know through a former coworker and her child how difficult it can be.

Robbin - this layout is so moving. Can I tell you that I teach a beautiful 16 year old whose parents have been in and out (mostly in) of jail for drug abuses for nearly all of her life. She has lived with her grandmother for most of the time and thought out all of this time has maintained a steadfast and deep love for her mother and father (who have unfailingly let her down on numerous occasions). She is now 16, deeply loves her grandmother and has an unusual but decent relationship with both her parents. Hang on in there - you count more that you will ever know and that beautiful little girl Alexi will thank you forever. Take care, thinking of you - if I can help, let me know.

I pray to God you don't let her see this until she is an adult and has been able to form her own opinion of her parents. I say this with the very best intention, as I've seen first hand what it does to a child to have their parents (as horrible as they are) be badmouthed. And in the end, it's the caregiver - the person that tried to "protect" the child all the time - that ends up being resented and hated. Tread SO lightly, Robin. I know it's hard, but you must never, ever speak negatively about them in front of her.

This is truly amazing. I am sorry this has happened in your family. I know how it feels though. It has been in my family my whole life

Robbin I am speechless..You are a Godsend to Lexi, just as much as she is to you. This is a truly honest and thought provoking look into what she has to deal with. I too will pray she takes the right path and set out to be an example of what not to do in life, with your guidance, I hope she will shine!! Bless you all Robbin! (((HUGS)))

This is an amazing layout. Just yesterday as I was going through heritage pics, I realized there are so many stories that I don't know. Everyone hides behind their smiles yet I know there were hidden issues that I'll never fully understand because everyone has died. I wish my mother or grandmother had made a book of truths so I'd truly know my family history.

omgsh-this breaks my heart...I really dont know you well, but I feel so much for you and your grand daughter. The journaling is so raw so honest and so real. ITs full of the wisdome of your love and hope. The pictures are stunning yet very sad. You can almost see the pain in her little 4 year old soul-which is aged beyond her years. I hope and pray that she goes through life with a attitude of survivor instead of being the victim of her circumstances and that she remembers the courage that you have taught her to believe in herself and to honor her self.

Robbin--you are an amazing grandma and you need to know how blessed Alexis is to have you. You ARE making a difference in her life, there is no way that you couldn't be. Please be reassured by knowing that the fact that you have shared part of your life has and will continue to bring many prayers your way. None of us can do it alone. Thank God that you are there for Alexis the way you are. You are giving her back some of the chances that have been taken from her.

Robbin - I'm so sorry for what your Grand-daughter is going through. As the child of an alcoholic, my Dad, who died when I was thirteen and a Mom with some addiction and mental health issues of her own . . .I know some of what Alexis will go through. I was lucky though because I had my Gram just as Alexis is lucky that she has you.

Bless that beautiful little girl that she chooses the right path as she gets older and bless you for being her gaurdian angel.

Love & smiles,

Margie

Wow - that is some seriously powerful stuff! I applaud you 100% for creating that book for Alexis. I've worked with high school kids who've dealt with incarcerated parents and many of them have issues that they're only beginning to deal with. Wow - the whole concept of this layout is amazing beyond words!
